The Department of Economics is one of the founding departments of Govt College Nerwa. Its vision is to produce academic and professional leaders who can contribute meaningfully to regional and national development. To this end, the department cultivates skills and team spirit among students through a combination of conventional and non-conventional teaching methods. Since its inception, it has offered a three-year undergraduate programme.

The curriculum emphasizes both theoretical and quantitative analysis. The primary objective of the programme is to equip students with the theoretical foundations and analytical tools required for understanding and addressing key economic issues. It also seeks to develop multidisciplinary competencies so that students are prepared to tackle complex and evolving challenges in the field of economics.

Students are introduced to core concepts through courses in microeconomics and macroeconomics. In addition, the department offers a range of specialized subjects such as economic systems, economic history of India, the Indian economy, development economics, international economics, money and banking, environmental economics, rural economics, demography, public finance, mathematical economics, statistical methods, basic econometrics, and research methodology. These courses aim to deepen students' understanding of the discipline and enhance their ability to apply economic reasoning to real-world problems.
