Originally established as S.D. College, the institution was taken over by the Government of Himachal Pradesh on 13 June 2002. The college is affiliated with Himachal Pradesh University, Shimla, and follows the academic regulations, curriculum, and examination system prescribed by the University. Over the years, the institution has emerged as an important centre of higher learning, serving students from Nerwa and the surrounding rural and tribal areas.

Until September 2017, the college functioned from the historic S.D. College building. The relocation to its modern campus marked a significant milestone in its development, providing spacious classrooms, well-equipped laboratories, a library, smart classrooms, sports facilities, and other essential infrastructure that support an effective teaching-learning environment.
